What search engine do Australian Mum and Dad searchers use?
When you target a particular demographic, it is important to understand how they navigate around the net. What search engines are they using? Its easy to figure out what sort of site they may be interested, but to know how they are using the net is something else entirely.
I run a high traffic site that has significant .au “Mum and Dad” traffic.
The large majority of this traffic comes through search engines (oh, how I wish it wasn’t so!).
Inspired by Hobo’s List Of Top Ten Search Engines in 2008, I thought I would examine my search engine referers for the year past.
Here’s the organic search engine spread for 2008:
| 762,857 | |
| yahoo | 23,464 |
| live | 4,138 |
| search | 1,983 |
| aol | 1,183 |
| ask | 1,031 |
| msn | 822 |
| altavista | 391 |
| netscape | 72 |
| alice | 23 |
(Although I have no idea who Alice is!)
And, yes, rankings are similar on Yahoo and MSN/Live to those on Google.
So, what does this tell us if we are targeting Australian mums and dads?
Get in bed with Google.
